The story behind the monsters that have found residence in the best toy store in Kansas City!

Have you ever been curious about the beast that guards the backroom? Find out about Grrr! and more Haley Lane Art beasts that call Bubble Wrapp home! In this article, we explore how a few of these star monsters found their home in this amazing Westport store!

The Origins of Grrr!

Grrr! is the massive furry friend that hangs out behind the cash register! He oversees many transactions with happy clients every day and stands guard! Grrr!’s creation followed many trips to the addictive shop that is Bubble Wrapp! I became absolutely hooked on seeing the incredible variety of figures and monsters that line the beautiful shelves and satisfyingly pop out of the gachapon (ガチャポン) capsules! I would be totally captivated admiring the total eye candy within such a fun place. I was offered to do a pop-up for the location and I couldn’t say yes quickly enough, and Grrr! was soon developed to take up a special spot in this eye candy heaven!

Grrr! was created inside of a painfully small living room in downtown Kansas City and originally created with materials meant to support a more temporary stay! When he was offered to have a longer visit behind the counter, it demanded I revisit some of his features to make him even more durable and strong! I got to working on some new files for some upgraded eyes and claws to submit to Hammerspace Forge! Hammerspace was happy to laser cut and print some brand new parts for me to pickup and install! Hammerspace Forge has proven to be a totally priceless resource for me as an artist and I love getting to pick up parts from them!

The new and improved Grrr! was finally ready to greet the public and have his great debut after being taken down and updated! The new eyes and claws were just the update that Grrr! was needing to help him better protect the inventory and watch over the always-smiling workers!

Grrr! can now be viewed during your next visit to Bubble Wrapp!

The Story of Diabaalical!

Diabaalical is the eyeless but not sightless fuzzy purple monster that lurks all around Bubble Wrapp’s headquarters in Westport. Where are his eyes? Nobody knows… that’s part of his mysterious story, but my guess is on the back of his head just like my mom! Aaaaaahhhh!!! Diabaalical was created for Haley Lane Art’s debut gallery show at Upper Level Gallery titled “Show Me Your Teeth” and features my first exploration into posable armature mechanisms! This monster has some incredibly flexible arms that can hold all kinds of treasures that Bubble Wrapp imports for their dedicated clientele! He found a home when Kitty and Nate, the total masterminds behind Bubble Wrapp, visited the gallery and thought he’d make the perfect hire!

The Monster in the Corner!

The Monster Mirror™ that calls the corner of Bubble Wrapp home was another featured item in the “Show Me Your Teeth” gallery showing in the Kansas City crossroads which transformed an upper story into a dreamland of portals and fuzzy creatures from Haley Lane Art! It is positioned at the perfect angle for a fit check with your new keychain or plush!

I truly can't say enough about how much it has meant to have my artwork find a home in such an incredible community. I remember visits over a decade ago to Westport where I would be so loaded with inspiration riding back home to my small hometown with my mom with songs scribbled onto a piece of paper that I was able to pick up from the radio that played music that you'd never hear on the radio where I grew up. To now be creating artworks for a designer toy store in the very village that was once so integral to my development as an artist is such a dream come true. And thank you so much Kitty and Nate! Now we have hit the very same roads for two years in a row to celebrate Kansas City Pride Parade with our friends!
